DRIMIPOSIS – The Aminuis-based sports association, Omongua Netball and Football Association (Onefa), will hold a tournament in honour of its former president Nanaki Kandjii this weekend at the Okomukaru sports ground in the Omaheke region.

Onefa lost their president, a sports icon in the constituency, to Covid-19 in 2021.

Speaking to New Era Sport, Mabeth Kazeurua, the current president of Onefa, said the late Kandjii played a pivotal role in developing sports in Aminuis and must be remembered for that. “Under his leadership, our All Stars netball and football teams were a thorn in the flesh for many opponents. We won two football finals during his three-year term,” remembered Kazeurua.

He added that players like the national team midfielder Marcel Papama, Ongos Valley’s Tjingee Kapundjiri, and Stima Patire, who played for Young African and Unam among others, are the products of the late Kandjii.

The competition attracted 41 football and 26 netball teams from the constituency.

Onefa has made available N$37 000 prize money in addition to trophies and medals.

The football teams will fight for N$ 27 000, while netball teams will share N$10 000.

Asked whether this will be the yearly event, the organiser said the plan is to make sure the late president is remembered every year.

The football games will start at 07h00 while netball will commence at 10h00 on Saturday.

The Omaheke-based Onefa was established in 1995.
