OMUTHIYA – Ongete FC won the first edition of the Amagoesa tournament by beating Omuthiya FC 1-0 in a nail-biting game.
The tournament was launched on Sunday at a packed Omuthiya modern sports field, and it will become a monthly event where eight teams will battle it out for honours.
Ongete walked away with the winner-takes-all prize of N$1,000 and a trophy, after manoeuvring through the highly contested knockout stages. The runner-up received a soccer ball.
According to the organiser John Ndeutepo, who is the sole sponsor through his business Amagoesa Bar and Grill, the tournament is an initiative to promote sports in Omuthiya and the entire region; hence, no registration fee is required to partake.
“I realised that there is a lack of activities that is happening in our town, and since we have the state-of-the-art sports field in Omuthiya I thought we should utilise this facility instead of letting it go to waste and in the same vein promote sports in the community,” said Ndeutepo.
Furthermore, he said, this will help the small teams to put themselves together through buying soccer kits because as it stands most of them lack the basics.
“The tournament will run on a monthly basis, with only eight teams which will be registered on a first come, first serve basis.
“All games will be played on a knockout basis because of the time frame and the fact that we are paying for the facility, thus we cannot play round robin.
“That is why the number of teams is also limited to allow us to finish on the same day of the games,” explained Ndeutepo who himself is from Omuthiya.
However, he hopes to transform the tournament into a league game in the near future. “I will have to engage town council on how we can collaborate together to turn the tournament into a league.”
