The much-anticipated 2024/25 FNB Women’s Super League (WSL) season kicked off this past weekend, with mixed results for reigning champions Ongos Ladies, while Beauties made a strong start, collecting maximum points.
Ongos Ladies, who dominated last season, were hoping for a strong start to their title defence. However, they were pegged back by a determined Unam Bokkies side’ as the two drew 1-all in a match played at Unam Stadium in the capital.
Memory Ngonda gave the visitors an early lead, but Hillary Gontes salvaged a point for Ongos with a late equaliser. Shama Gure, the head coach at Ongos Ladies, expressed disappointment with Saturday’s results.
“It wasn’t the result we wanted. We hoped to secure maximum points, but we had to settle for a draw,” he said.
Despite the setback, Gure remains optimistic. “It’s football, and these things do happen. We’ll learn from this draw, and come back stronger in the next match,” he said.
Meanwhile, African Stars Queens, formerly known as Ongwediva Queens, suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Beauties in a tie played at Independence Stadium in the capital. Lydia Shamillia scored the decisive goal to give Beauties a crucial three points.
In an interview after the match, Salome Iyambo, the head coach of Beauties, heaped praise on her charges after an exceptional performance against a very stubborn African Stars Queens.
“Great result although we could have done better today. Great teamwork from the
players as they all came to the party. It’s a win and that’s the most important thing. We have new players on the team who brought a different flavour to our play today. We must be clinical in front of goal next time, and we’ll build from this,” she said.
Iyambo acknowledged the challenges ahead, saying “This season will be tough. We must stay focused and work hard. Every team wants to win the league, but we’re determined to give it our best shot.”
Meanwhile, African Stars Queens’ assistant coach Nangolo Samuel told this publication after the match that his charges misused their opportunity, which had caused them points. He, however, said they will take it as a learning curve and rectify their mistakes in the next match.
Elsewhere, Arrows Ladies registered a 2-1 win in their opening match of the season against Julinho Athletic Ladies. Lorraine Jossop and Talitha Aubes found the back of the net for Arrows Ladies. Meanwhile, Beverly Uueziua scored the only goal for Julinho Athletic Ladies.
