Ongos Valley on Friday announced plans to build a 30 000-seater sports stadium and sports village on the outskirts of Katutura, in Windhoek.
The envisaged stadium will meet the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) technical standards, and will include a state-of-the-art soccer field, a nine-lane athletics track and various facilities designed to meet national and international requirements.
The sports village and stadium will be constructed within 36 months.
Speaking during the launch, Reagon Graig, chairperson of Ongos Valley, said their commitment to investing in sports infrastructure in Namibia is driven by their profound understanding of the benefits that sports bring to individuals, communities and the nation.
“Investing in sports infrastructure is essential for promoting community well-being, fostering national pride and advancing economic growth,” he said.
Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service Agnes Tjongarero said the stadium and sports village concept is not just for elite athletes, but it’s a venue for every young boy and girl who dreams of representing Namibia on the global stage.
Also giving a vote of thanks at the event, the governor of Khomas Region Laura McLeod-Katjirua said the Ongos Valley Sport Village is more than just a sporting facility.
“The Ongos Valley Sports Village and stadium is a symbol of social unity, economic opportunity, and cultural pride. We are dedicated to developing a space that not only meets international standards but also reflects the spirit of Namibia.” she said.
Meanwhile, Ricardo Mannetti, Sports Director of Ongos Football Club highlighted the need to celebrate the dedication of former and current sports stars in reaching the top of their respective sports.
“With the introduction of the Ongos Valley Stadium, we have formed an ambassadors’ programme where former and current national sports stars will represent the stadium development project in various capacities,” he said.
Former and current athletes who were announced as stadium ambassadors are Frank Fredericks, Peter Shalulile, DJ Strauss, Prince Goaseb, Uakazuwaka ‘Wacca’ Kazombiaze, Magreth Mengo, Lovisa Mulunga, Collin Benjamin, Sandro de Gouveia and Zenatha Coleman. -Nampa
