ONGWEDIVA – The Ongwediva Control Combined School (OCCS) on Friday awarded learners who passed the first and second term examinations this year with an average of 80 percent. The school’s principal, Hofni Kapolo, told Nampa in an interview on the sidelines of the awards’ ceremony that the school collected its own funds to host the event. “We conducted fundraising events earlier this year to be able to sponsor our event, as we have no external sponsors,” he said. Grade 10 learner Hilia Simon was declared the school’s overall best achiever. She passed the examinations in the first and second terms with 42 points each. Other top achievers were Hilka Taapopi (pre-primary); Alvira Nghidipo (Grade 1); Given Katonyala (Grade 2); Marius Tangeni (Grade 3); Alleta Kadhikwa (Grade 4); Rauha Halweendo (Grade 5); Secilia Ambunda (Grade 6); Kaarina Nantinda (Grade 7); Natalia Kaapangelwa (Grade 8); and Hilma Nampweya (Grade 9). These achievers received various prizes, ranging from school bags to uniforms. The school has 935 learners from pre-primary grade to Grade 10, and 34 teachers. The OCCS was established as a primary school in 1979. It operated in the Teachers’ Resource Centre buildings inside the then Ongwediva Teachers’ College, which is now the Hifikepunye Pohamba Campus of the University of Namibia. It has its own premises in the centre of Ongwediva since 1993.
