WINDHOEK
Despite a few initial minor creative and casting problems, the first play in this year’s theater festival of Committed Artists of Namibia, the Afrikaans play, Die Laaste Karretjie Graf, is now ready and poised to be staged on May 27 and 28.
The 38th annual theater festival is generously sponsored by the First National Bank Foundation, Khomasdal Motor Spares, Hochland Tractor Center, Khomasdal Service Station and Hochland Service Station. A selected play excerpt pre-view of the Afrikaans drama by South African world renowned playwright, Athol Fugard, will be exclusively staged for the benefit of the local invited print and electronic media on Saturday, May 14 at 18h00 in the Ultimate Theater at Eldorado School Hall in Khomasdal. The full cast of the play are: David Campbell, Pienkies the eldest son of the Geduld family, Shirley Swartz, the granny and matriarch of the family trapped in abject poverty, John Isaacs, as Toek-Toek, the second eldest son in the family and daughter, Rokkies, portrayed by Astrid Dirks, a Grade 9 learner at Khomastura Secondary School in Khomasdal.
Veteran actors Felicity Celento portrays the part of Sarah, a university social researcher on the socio-economic situation of the nomadic Khoi-San people in South Africa, and play director, Frederick B. Philander, stars in the role of double murderer, Koot Geduld, in this captivating stage work that reflects strongly on passion killings.
