Opinion – A tribute to His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma

We stand in deep reverence and gratitude, as we pay tribute to a remarkable son of Africa—His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, the Founding President of the Republic of Namibia and the father of our nation. Dr. Nujoma’s life is a story of unwavering courage, selfless sacrifice, and unshakeable love for his people. From humble beginnings, he rose to lead a nation that longed for freedom, standing at the forefront of our liberation struggle with a heart filled with hope and a vision for a united Namibia. Through decades of hardship and adversity, Dr. Nujoma remained a pillar of strength. He carried the weight of our nation’s dreams on his shoulders and never wavered in his commitment to justice and freedom. His footsteps echo the pain and triumph of our people, the tears shed, the battles fought, and ultimately, the victory won. Yet, his legacy extends far beyond our independence. As the first president of Namibia, Dr. Nujoma devoted himself to nation-building, fostering unity, and planting the seeds of peace and progress. He inspired generations with his wisdom, integrity, and boundless love for this land. His dream was not just for liberation but for a future where every Namibian could walk tall in dignity and pride. Even today, his words resonate in our hearts, urging us to carry forward the torch of unity, peace, and development. His vision for a prosperous Namibia remains our guiding light, and his enduring legacy will forever live in the soul of this nation. During his time as the president of the country, our president also made significant contributions and supported various projects in the //Kharas region. These projects included, but were not limited to, the following:

Naute Dam Irrigation Scheme

One of the flagship agricultural projects in the //Kharas region under Nujoma’s leadership. This project focuses on the cultivation of dates and table grapes for both local consumption and export.

Grape production on the Orange River

Nujoma encouraged the development of vineyards along the Orange River, which has contributed to Namibia’s export economy, and created jobs for local communities.

Economic revival of Lüderitz

Nujoma’s government supported the modernisation and expansion of Lüderitz’s port facilities, boosting fishing and tourism in the region.

Fishing industry expansion

Promoted the fishing industry in Lüderitz, leading to increased investment in fish-processing plants and the creation of employment opportunities.

Diamond mining revival

 Encouraged offshore diamond exploration and mining in the Lüderitz area, bringing significant revenue to the local economy.

Road upgrades

Improved road networks connecting Keetmanshoop, Lüderitz, and other towns in the //Karas region to enhance trade and accessibility.

Development of the Lüderitz-Keetmanshoop railway line

Played a crucial role in reviving the railway line to boost transportation and economic activities between Lüderitz and the interior.

Tourism promotion

Focused on the preservation and promotion of heritage sites in the region, such as Kolmanskop and other historical landmarks in Lüderitz, to attract tourists.

Youth empowerment and vocational training

Supported the establishment of vocational training initiatives and agricultural training centres to equip youth in the region with practical skills.

To His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, we say thank you. Thank you for your sacrifice. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for giving us a future filled with endless possibilities. May we continue to honour your life by building a Namibia rooted in unity, peace, and prosperity – just as you dreamed it to be. You are not just a hero of the past; you are the heartbeat of our future.

The day when I was so privileged to shake hands with you in my official capacity at Keetmanshoop airport will forever be printed in my memory.
