The supply of drought relief food in Opuwo is rather slow, the councillor for Opuwo Constituency, Kazeongere Tjeundo, told New Era on Tuesday.

Tjeundo said the Opuwo storehouse is never full with food and that means the community does not always get drought relief food on time. Each beneficiary, Tjeundo noted, is supposed to get a bag of maize meal each month but that has not been the case in Opuwo.

“People are flocking to the councillor’s office to lament their disappointment at the process of drought relief supply,” said Tjeundo, who added that he is currently consulting with relevant authorities to ensure the storehouse at Opuwo is filled with food.

The councillor said that considering the impact of the drought, everybody in Opuwo should benefit from the drought relief programme and not just the elderly, expecting women, lactating mothers and children under the age of five.

“We thought this time around the drought relief programme would be inclusive. The drought has really affected people here. People were used to milking their cows but now they cannot even do that and they do not know where to get food, so they are really starving,” Tjeundo added.
