Oshakati continues easing burden on residents

Oshakati continues easing burden on residents

Auleria Wakudumo

In an ongoing effort to ease the financial burden residents, the Oshakati Town Council announced the continuation of waiving all residents’ municipal accounts in arrears.

This measure forms part of the council’s commitment to provide relief to its residents, especially in these challenging economic times.

Last year in September, Council announced that all interest accumulated on all municipal accounts are to be waived.

This decision was taken by council to encourage all account holders to be able to honour paying their municipal services, and all clients with accounts to be able pay off their debts. As a result, most account holders have settled their outstanding bills.

Spokesperson Katarina Kamari said, Council’s debts owed by customers which stood at N$80.2 million in June 2023, decreased to N$60.9 million.

“This is a big milestone for the town and residents for embracing the opportunity and their continuous commitment in honouring their municipal accounts,” she said.

The continuation of this exercise is Council’s way of assisting the community to meet their financial commitments without being overwhelmed by interest charges.

The wavering of interest on municipal accounts is applicable to all, including residential, schools, businesses, non-profit organisations, community-based organisations, churches, government and parastatals.

Kamari said it is important to note that the debts are subject to increase monthly due to non- payment.

“Residents are therefore urged to continue honouring their municipal accounts, as revenue-collection of the town is very important as it permits development in town,” she said.
