Oshana Region was on Easter Monday crowned champions of the 2016 The Namibian Newspaper Cup, after defeating Khomas Region 2-0 in the final played at a fully packed Rundu Sports Stadium.

Oshana player Andreas Keenjele scored the opening goal in the first half and Petrus Amutenya scored the second goal in the second half.

Khomas walked away with a silver medal for finishing second overall.

The bronze medal went to hosts Kavango East Region, which finished third after captain Mario Kandjimi scored from the spot to ensure they beat Omaheke 1-0.

The host team goalkeeper George Siyemo was  selected as Man of the Match for that game.

This year’s Newspaper Cup was held in Rundu, Kavango East, and 14 regions partook in the 16th edition of the cup. The defending champions Omusati Region were knocked out 2-0 by Khomas on Saturday.

Fair Play Team of the Tournament award went to Ohangwena Region, while Lulu Fransisco of Khomas Region was chosen as the Goalkeeper of the Tournament. The Golden Boot award went to Rowan Engelbrecht of Khomas Region.

Player of the Tournament award went to Israel Shilongo of Oshana Region.

The Namibian Newspaper Cup started Thursday and ended on Easter Monday at the Rundu Sports Stadium,  which was fully packed to the rafters from day one to the final match.
