Otjiwarongo accident claims two lives

… four trucks south involved

OTJIWARONGO – Two men lost their lives on Thursday morning in an accident involving four trucks approximately 12 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region.
Regional Police Commander, Commissioner, Philip Hidengwa, told Nampa at the accident scene that preliminary investigations indicate that the truck with an Outapi number plate was heading south when it sideswiped one of three trucks in convoy to the B2Gold Mine.
“The first truck’s mirror and right rear tyre were damaged. The truck from Outapi further veered into the right lane and collided head-on with a second truck. The impact was so severe that both trucks’ wrecks were scattered onto the road,” said the senior police officer.
The third truck slightly bumped into the wrecks of the two trucks, as the driver, fortunately, avoided ploughing into them, Hidengwa said.

The three trucks who were in convoy from the coast were transporting containers of cyanide chemicals, used for mining activities at the B2Gold Mine.
The impact of the head-on collision with the second truck instantly killed the two male occupants in the Outapi-registered truck.
One of the drivers of the B2Gold trucks, a 35-year-old man, broke his body in several places, and was taken to the Otjiwarongo State Hospital in critical condition, Hidengwa explained.
Police investigations continue.
