OZOMBOUVAPA – The remaining two fixtures of the second leg of the Otjozondjupa Women’s Football League (OWFL) will resume after school examinations in June.
League coordinator Raisaneua Kasaona told New Era Sports that after having successful second-leg matches played over a long weekend at Otjiwarongo’s Paresis Sports ground, the league will go on break to enable learners to study.
“We consider the education of our players as priority, and we do not want to disturb their studies. Most players are learners from our secondary schools in the region, and we will play the remaining fixtures around June,” Kasaona said.
In the matches played over the weekend, Okakarara defeated Girls and Goals by 2-0, whereas Golden Mission overcame Okahandja 3-1.
Erari defeated Girls and Goals 3-0. Grootfontein beat Tigress 3-1 in the fourth match, while Okakarara lost 0-3 against Otavi.
TLC defeated Erari 3-0. Grootfontein stunned TLC 2-0. Otjiwarongo Sports Academy defeated Kaltes 2-1, whereas Golden Mission continued with their winning streak, defeating TLC 4-1. Okahandja crushed Kaltes 5-0 to end an action-packed day at Otjiwarongo.
After 21 matches played in the second round, Golden Mission top the league with 58 points, followed by Grootfontein and Otavi in second and third place with 52 and 46 points respectively, while the bottom of the table is in the hands of Uitkoms with one point.
Uitkoms team comprises mainly marginalised San community footballers, and faces many challenges, ranging from sports gear and transportation to league matches.
Golden Mission’s head coach Joseph Mwale Mwashekele said his team’s performance is due to players’ commitment and discipline.
“This is a very young team with a mission to play in the country’s topflight women’s football league. We take every game seriously, and our training methods enable us to win every game,” he said.
Additionally, Kasaona said they are waiting for a decision from the Namibia Football Association on whether teams will be promoted or relegated from the league. – zngaruka@yahoo.com
