The Ovambanderu Traditional Authority is gearing up for the second edition of its annual Fun Games, scheduled for Saturday at Bethold Himumuine Primary School sports grounds in Windhoek.
The event will bring together eight Ovambanderu branches from across the country to compete in a variety of sporting codes, including football, netball, tug of war, athletics, amongest others, and table board.
According to Tutu Muundjua, chairperson of the organising committee, the initiative is not only about entertainment but also about reinforcing unity within the Ovambanderu community.
“This fun day is part of the Ovambanderu calendar, and it gives an opportunity to all leadership structures and branches to mingle. The aim is to create and strengthen the spirit of togetherness through various sporting activities,” Muundjua said.
He added that football will feature seven-a-side, while netball will be played in its usual format.
“Sport is one of the best ways to bring people together, and we want all Ovambanderu to actively participate. This is also a chance for the youth to interact with senior members of the community and share experiences,” he explained.
The fun games come on the heels of the Ovambanderu’s participation in the Lusata Festival in Chincimani, Zambezi Region, and are expected to serve as a refreshing social activity.
Among the highlights, Chief Tjozohongo II Nguvauva will swap his traditional regalia for football boots as he takes up the goalkeeper role, while senior traditional councillor Eliphas Tjingaete will showcase his skills in the onjune competition. Bishop Theo Pura and Ovambanderu spokesperson Uazenga Ngahahe are also expected to feature prominently in the tug of war, an event they have become known for.
Adding to the excitement, former Kilus Eleven FC striker Uahavi Kauami is expected to lead the leadership team in the football matches, while netball veterans such as Eerike Eckey Tjituka and Vevangaije Kakuenje will demonstrate the flair they honed from a young age.
Muundjua stressed that the day is about unity and recreation rather than competition, noting that no prizes will be awarded.
“This is about fun and fellowship. Our calendar does not only cater to commemorations but also includes provisions for fun activities. All leadership structures will be represented, which makes this event an important team-building exercise,” he said.
He further urged the wider community in Windhoek to join in the festivities.
“You must all come to support and have fun with us. Fun is needed in our community, and sport provides that,” he emphasised.
Entry at the gate will be N$20 for adults and N$10 for children.
