Over 200 arrested for drug possession

The Namibia Police  say it seized more than one million kilograms of cannabis and arrested 222 suspects during nationwide drug operations conducted last month.

According to police figures, a total of 1.1 million kilograms of cannabis was confiscated during the month. Other drugs seized include 19 131 mandrax tablets (full and quarter doses), 28 grams of cocaine powder, 38 grams of crystal methamphetamine, 177.5 units of crack cocaine and 36 abortion pills.

Police said the arrests included 214 Namibians, one Angolan, three Congolese, one Burundian and three Zambian nationals.

No further details were provided on where the drugs were seized, the nature of the operations, or whether the cannabis figure includes uprooted plants or estimated field weights.

The reported volume of cannabis seized is significantly higher than figures typically recorded in monthly drug enforcement statistics.
