More than 400 students from the River Higher Institute of Technology (RHIT) graduated from the institution’s first graduation ceremony in Windhoek on Friday.
The students from its various campuses at Ondangwa, Walvis Bay and Windhoek received qualifications in technical and vocational education, hospitality and tourism.
This is the institute’s first graduation since transforming from the former Monitronics Success College.
Erstwhile Monitronics Success College’s rector, Professor Daniel Nyaungwa, said the new institute is ready to impact the global economy with an astute workforce.
“Becoming RHIT was not just a mere change of names. It represents what we are now offering to Namibia today,” he stated.
“Monitronics was originally founded to bridge the gap between VTCs and universities, with Level 1 to Level 5 qualifications. But now, RHIT is offering qualifications from Level 1 to Level 10. We have been accredited in some of the degree levels already. With this graduation, we pride ourselves in contributing citizens to the global economy,” he beamed.
After its maiden graduation, the institute now seeks to be a force to be reckoned with in the higher echelons of academia. Its Otjiwarongo campus has already been transformed into a hospitality school, while the Ondangwa campus will in 2024 become a fully-fledged vocational training centre. The Walvis Bay campus will become a maritime centre.
Among the cohort of students were 40 hospitality and tourism graduates, who received a N$3.1m education grant from the Social Security Commission (SSC).
“These grants are not just financial assistance, they represent a profound investment in your potential, your dreams and the future of our society. The recipients of these grants have demonstrated their commitment to their education, their communities and their futures. We are proud of you,” said the SSC’s business development manager Nambata Angula at the ceremony.
In a speech read on his behalf, RHIT chancellor Dr Peya Mushelenga, who is also the Minister of Information and Communication Technology, acknowledged the incredible amount of talent and determination that is within the 2023 graduating class.
“Today marks a significant milestone in your journey—one that represents countless hours of dedication, perseverance, and intellectual growth. As you receive your awards, remember that this moment is not an endpoint but a beginning—a stepping-stone towards a future filled with endless possibilities. Embrace the journey ahead, remain connected and committed to continuous learning, follow your passion, and strive to make a difference. The world awaits your brilliance, and I have no doubt that you will go on to achieve great things,” he observed.
