Head coach of third division Spitting Cobras Simson Paulus said coaching a football team is not just about giving instructions from the sidelines—it is about scouting talent, nurturing players and guiding them from training to match-day.
For Paulus, this process is both fulfilling and driven by passion. Despite being in a wheelchair, Paulus refuses to let his disability limit him, embracing the challenges that come with the role.
“The only real challenge I face as a coach in a wheelchair is demonstrating certain techniques to my players… But even that is manageable, except when my assistants aren’t available. Other than that, I don’t have many difficulties,” he stated.
Like many lower-division teams, Spitting Cobras, established in 2022, struggles with financial support.
“We don’t have a dedicated sponsor… We rely on ourselves – players and technical staff contribute to cover expenses like transport, kits and other team necessities,” he revealed.
Paulus is no stranger to top-flight coaching, having previously managed Unam Bokkies in the Women’s Super League during his university days.
Comparing the two experiences, he noted significant differences.
“At Unam Bokkies, we had everything we needed – transport, equipment, playing and training kits. We even provided transport for players. Now, it’s completely different, but I still cherish those memories. Coaching in the Women’s Super League was an amazing experience, and I hope to return one day, hopefully with Outapi Spitting Cobras Ladies FC,” he shared.
Looking ahead, Paulus has ambitious plans for his club.
“In the next five years, we want our women’s team to compete in the Women’s Super League and our men’s team, currently in the Omusati Third Division, to move up to the regional second division, if not the national first division. Our ladies’ team won last season’s regional women’s soccer league, but unfortunately there were no promotions or playoffs to the super league by then. We are hoping it will be there at the end of this season,” said the passionate coach.
He went on to say; “We are all committed to this vision, and hopefully, we can attract sponsors to help make these dreams a reality for our young players.”
