WINDHOEK – Yesterday marked the start of the eagerly anticipated national Premier Chess League (PCL) after a record 14 chess teams registered to participate in the 26-week-long campaign of cerebral rivalry.
League organisers will be hosting all 26 rounds of the PCL in Windhoek at the Protea Hotel Thuringerhof every Monday and each round starts at 18h30 and continues until 21h00. Among the crème de la crème taking part in this year’s mind games are defending champions Capablanca Chess Club, last year’s runner-ups and the home team of the Namibian chess champion Goodwill Khoa, the Gunter Husselman Chess Club.
Also packing a lot of strong players is last year’s 3rd place finishers, the Indomitable Knights Chess Club. Also, looking very promising this year is the 2013 schools team champions, The Weekend Chess Academy (TWCA), with an impressive stable of former junior champions and highly talented youngsters. Joining the league for the first time are Checkmate Chess Club, Police Chess Club, Poly Rookers, Poly U-Knighted, Unam Chess Club and Unam Khomasdal Chess Club.
