A case of culpable homicide was opened on Monday against Fillipus Nuunyango, 52, following an accident in which he lost control of a Toyota Fortuner while overtaking, resulting in the vehicle flipping over and killing three.

Among those identified as killed in the accident are Rauna Nuunyango and Ndahambelela Nepando. The crash happened at about 11h30 along the Oshivelo-Ondangwa main road, some 30 km from Ondangwa.

According to Oshikoto Regional Crime Coordinator Deputy Commissioner Naomi Katjiua, Nuunyango bumped into a Toyota Corolla, which was driven by Paulus Martin, aged 31, but the latter did not sustain injuries. Katjiua said both drivers were heading towards Ondangwa at the time.

Nuunyango died on her way to Okatope Clinic. She was from Onalunike village, Omuthiya. Nepando died on her way to Onandjokwe Hospital. There were five passengers in the Fortuner, including Maria Tulipamwe, 41, Secilia Mateus, 36, and four-year-old Shali Elifas.

The surviving passengers from the Fortuner were admitted to Onandjokwe Hospital for medical attention. The passengers in the Corolla escaped unharmed.

Also on the same day, a former retired police sergeant, Timotheus Alupe, 66, died on the spot when the car he was travelling in overturned. The accident happened at about 18h00 at the Onyati-Onahenene gravel road, some 10 km from the tar road.

Three other passengers, including the driver, were admitted to Omuthiya District Hospital. “A case of culpable homicide has been opened against Nande Alupe, as he lost control of a Toyota Condor and it overturned,” Katjiua said.

In a separate incident, a case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against Jeremia Amutenya, aged 38. It is alleged the driver of a TransNamib train April 11 bumped Martha Sagaria, 38. The victim was crossing the railway line when the train bumped her.

The accident occurred on the railway line near Engoyi village.
