Personality of the week – Meet cycling enthusiast- extraordinaire Monga

At just 19, Sithembile Monga had a passion for cycling that is as strong as her spirit. Her journey started through the Physically Active Youth (PAY) programme, where she now volunteers.
She declared with a grin that she wants to “cycle until the end of time”.
Let us dive into her world with some fun questions and answers.

How did you get into cycling?

I got my start at PAY. I tried out various sports, but I really shone in cycling. I began with bicycle motocross (BMX), then transitioned to mountain biking (MTB) and road cycling. I thrive on challenges, so I like to think cycling chose me.

Tell us about your family life. How many siblings do you have?

I live with my wonderfully quirky single mom and my younger sister, who is also a local cycling champion. We are a goofy family, filled with good vibes and endless laughter.

How many cycling competitions have you participated in? Which is the most memorable?

I kicked off my competitive cycling journey in 2018. I have raced in about 65 competitions so far, with many more on the horizon. The most unforgettable one? The 2023 Road Bike Nationals. It was my first-time trial race, and I snagged second place – even with a grumpy tummy.

Do you have any pre-ride rituals or superstitions?

Since I do not have a fancy home trainer, I make sure to stretch properly and take a short, easy ride to warm up. As a music lover, I have got a race playlist that helps calm my nerves.

What is your go-to snack during a long ride that people might find unusual?

Rice crisps, wrapped in foil, and homemade granola bars from our ‘team mom’ are my secret fuel for those long rides. Trust me, they are delicious.

If you could cycle anywhere in the world without worrying about time or money, where would you go, and why?

I would head straight to the stunning coast of Croatia. The blend of breathtaking old-world architecture, refreshing weather and views that feature both water and forest is simply irresistible.

What is the strangest or funniest thing that has happened to you during a race or training?

Funny story: during my first Rock n Rut race, everything was going smoothly until my teammate’s rear wheel decided to take a vacation and rolled down the gravel road, only to be caught by a tree. We ended up lost for about 10 minutes, but we could not stop laughing.

If you could design your dream bike, what crazy features would it have?

My dream mountain bike would be something out of a sci-fi movie. Imagine a button that flips slides on the wheels, letting me ride on water with a speed boost. Oh, and it would camouflage itself to avoid theft – no more worrying about my precious ride.

What is your guilty pleasure when it comes to bike gear or accessories?

I have a serious soft spot for socks. The louder and more creative, the better. There is something so satisfying about the sound of my bike wheels on the road, paired with my vibrant socks.

If cycling had a theme song, what would yours be?

Big Dawgs by Hanumankind and Kahim is my anthem. The hype and energy in that song just get me pumped.

Do you ever have ‘deep thoughts’ while cycling? What is the most random thing you have pondered during a long ride?

Cycling feels like therapy to me. I often find myself musing about how astronomy, astrology, religion and various conspiracy theories connect.

If you had one superpower while cycling, what would it be?

I would choose mind-reading. Just imagine being able to tap into other riders’ thoughts, and share a laugh. Plus, it would help me support others’ mental health. I would love to help them feel better.

If you could cycle with any historical figure or celebrity – dead or alive – who would it be, and what would you talk about?

I would love to ride with Eyeru Tesfoam. I would want to chat about mental health from the perspective of a black African female cyclist, and how to adapt to European living.

If you could use only your bike for one kind of ride for the rest of your life – either uphill or downhill – which would you choose?

I would pick downhill every time. It is thrilling and risky, and the adrenaline rush is unbeatable. Plus, I am all for the adventure – even if it means a few scars.

What is your secret trick for staying motivated on the most challenging rides?

During tough training sessions and races, I remind myself that I am far from home and have no choice but to finish. That thought keeps me going.
