At just 16, Ruben Yssel is making a name for himself as one of Namibia’s most promising young tennis players.

Growing up in a family where tennis was a long-going tradition, it was only natural for him to pick up a racket.

“Tennis has always been a major part of my family. I decided to give it a try, and I instantly fell in love with it,” he shared.

His passion quickly turned into a commitment.

Yssel follows a demanding training schedule, spending at least two hours on the court every day to improve his skills and game-plan. He dedicates another hour to strengthening and conditioning to keep himself physically prepared at all times.

“I always remind myself of the bigger picture and my goals,” he said.

“That’s what keeps me going – even on tough days,” added Yssel.

His dedicat ion has already led to remarkable achievements.

At just 12 years old, he had his breakthrough moment when he competed in an under-16 tournament and won.

“That match was a turning point for me. It made me realise that I could compete at a high level if I worked hard enough,” he added.

However, as with any sport, the path to success has not been easy.

In 2024, he had a major setback when he contracted malaria while representing Namibia at the Davis Cup in Nigeria.

The illness was a tough challenge physically and mentally.

“It was a difficult time, but I knew I had to stay positive,” he shared.

“I focused on my recovery and getting back on the court as soon as possible,” he said.

Despite the challenges, he remains focused on his long-term goals.

He dreams of playing college tennis in the United States of America while continuing to represent Namibia in the Davis Cup.

Watching top players like Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic has been a huge source of inspiration for him.

“I admire Djokovic for his discipline and mental toughness. He never gives up – no matter the situation. That’s something I try to apply to my own game,” Yssel went on to share.

When it comes to handling the pressure of matches, he keeps things simple.

“I try to stay calm and enjoy the moment. When I relax and don’t overthink, I play my best tennis,” he revealed.

This mindset has helped him to navigate tough matches and stay focused on improving, rather than worrying about results.

Off the court, Yssel enjoys the little things that matter.

His favourite meal is barbecued meat.

When it comes to travel, London holds a special place in his heart.

“There’s just something about the city that I love. The atmosphere and the history – it’s an amazing place to be,” the tennis star said.

Yssel values the support of his family, especially his sister, Lisa, who has been by his side throughout his journey.

“I really appreciate my family,” he said.
