Personality of the week – Rising star: Vitario ‘Namab’ Brunzel shines on football field

YANGZHOU – At the age of 16, Vitario ‘Namab’ Brunzel is already establishing his presence in the realm of football. Hailing from the lively town of Keetmanshoop, he is part of a distinguished family known for their football prowess.

His grandfather, affectionately referred to as Ou Five Hochobeb, along with his father Ricky Gowaseb and several uncles, all made their mark on the field during their youth, creating high expectations for Brunzel to emulate their success.

Presently, as a talented left winger and central midfielder for DTS club, he is committed to upholding the family tradition while forging his own identity in the sport.

Currently representing the Khomas Regional team, he is competing in the esteemed 2024 Grand Canal Cities Youth Football Tournament in Yangzhou, China.

This experience not only provides him with a platform to demonstrate his abilities, but also offers the chance to learn from international competitors.

This marks a pivotal moment in his football career, one that New Era Sport was keen to delve into during an exclusive interview with this promising young athlete.

Brunzel’s love for football ignited at the tender age of eight when he first joined DTS.

His early start laid the foundation for what has become a deep passion for the game.

When asked about what he enjoys most about football, he was quick to highlight the thrill of victory.

“The victories mean everything to me. I enjoy working hard, and relishing the joy that comes with winning,” he shared.

This drive for success not only fuels his ambitions, but also motivates his teammates.

Brunzel has a clear understanding of his role on the pitch.

“My job is to receive and distribute the ball effectively, as well as to score important goals when the opportunity arises,” he said confidently.

Beyond individual performance, he feels a strong sense of responsibility to uplift his teammates.

“I encourage my team to work hard and do better,” he added.

This sense of camaraderie enhances their collective performance, and makes the experience more enriching.

The trip to China has been a remarkable opportunity for him, allowing him to connect with players he might not have met otherwise.

“This trip is essential for our growth as footballers… Playing against different players helps us gain experience, and I’ve enjoyed spending time with my teammates,” he said.

The bonds formed during such journeys can often be as important as the games played, creating lifelong friendships.

Reflecting on his competitive experiences, Brunzel recalled his participation in various tournaments.

“I recently played in the Kapstad Tournament in South Africa – and shortly after that, I joined the Khomas Regional team for this tournament in Yangzhou,” he stated.

Each competition presents its challenges and memories, but he emphasised the importance of continuous learning and growth in every match he plays.

The evolution of football over the years is another topic close to his heart.

He acknowledged the significant improvements in the sport, and expresses optimism for the future.

“There is definitely improvement from where it was years ago… I believe this progress will allow young players, like me, to join the Premier League structure at an earlier age, with hopes of being scouted by national team coaches and perhaps playing abroad someday,” he noted.

His ambition is palpable, as he envisions a bright future in professional football.

Pre-game rituals are a part of many athletes’ routines, and Brunzel is no exception.

“I just pray before and after a match,” he revealed.

His faith plays a central role in his life, offering him a sense of calm and focus as he prepares for each game.

“I believe in prayer, and giving thanks to the Lord,” he added, highlighting the importance of gratitude on his journey.

If given the chance to play anywhere in the world, he dreams of making his mark in Europe.

“I would like to spend my youthful years playing in Europe, and then retire in the South African Premier League,” he expressed.

This ambition reflects his desire to reach the highest levels of the sport, while honouring his roots.

Staying motivated during challenging matches is essential for any athlete, and Brunzel has a unique approach.

“I stay calm… I was taught from an early age that a calm player can read the game better and make the right choices,” he divulged.

This level-headedness allows him to navigate high-pressure situations effectively.

Beyond football, Brunzel enjoys simple pleasures.

His favourite meal is chicken and macaroni, and he has a penchant for Sprite.

While he loves the excitement of international destinations like China, he holds a special place in his heart for his hometown, Keetmanshoop.

As he continues his football journey, it is clear that his name is destined to shine on and off the pitch.
