Personality of the week – Sibomana: juggling schoolwork and cycling

Youthful, driven, and brimming with energy, Prince Sibomana demonstrated his grit and determination during last year’s demanding Nedbank Desert Dash. A talented young cyclist and Grade 11 pupil at Eldorado Secondary School, who dreams of becoming a diesel mechanic, Sibomana shared with this publication how his passion for cycling has grown and the commitment required to keep his wheels turning.

What first sparked your interest in cycling, and how did you get started?

My interest in cycling began when my parents bought me my first bicycle. I found myself riding every day, choosing cycling over other sports, and dedicating more time to it. This consistent practice built my confidence and made me want to be part of a community of cyclists. Over time, I immersed myself fully in the sport. Despite initial doubts, I gave it a try, and cycling has since become something I truly love and enjoy.

What does your training regimen look like, and how do you stay consistent?

My training schedule depends on my performance in previous sessions and how my body feels. Typically, I train for one and a half hours daily, except Fridays, which I use for rest. I stay consistent by focusing on my goals and reminding myself of the joy and growth cycling brings. My coach ensures my routine is balanced to avoid burnout while pushing me to improve.

What are your short-term and long-term goals as a cyclist?

My short-term goal is to achieve as many podium finishes as possible this year. Long-term, I aspire to join a better team that competes internationally. I dream of touring the world with a professional team, gaining experience in international races, and showcasing my talent on a global stage.

How do you manage to balance cycling with school?

I maintain a disciplined schedule to balance my commitments. After school, I dedicate about two hours to schoolwork, followed by an hour and a half to cycling training. After training, I take an hour’s rest before revising schoolwork to ensure I understand the day’s lessons better. This structured routine helps me stay on top of both academics and cycling.

What has been the most memorable moment of your cycling career so far?

Achieving my first podium finish during the FNB School Series. I initially participated to gain experience, focusing on learning rather than competing. However, as the series progressed, I studied the races more closely, which boosted my confidence. That experience taught me how to prepare effectively for races, strengthen myself both physically and mentally, and perform at my best. It also brought me immense joy and showed me the importance of staying consistent in training and working within a supportive environment.

Taking part in last year’s Nedbank Desert Dash was quite the best experience I’ve ever had, but it was also the hardest. I rode the climb stage, and the only advantage I had was riding at night. The reason I say it was hard is because you had to communicate with your teammates, check on how they were feeling, and not only consider yourself, but also the rest of the team. Coming out of the climb stage was a challenge, and my muscles were in so much pain afterwards.

Have you faced any significant challenges in your cycling journey, and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge I’ve faced is maintaining consistency in training. However, being surrounded by a motivating and supportive community has helped me stay on track. My coach and teammates create an environment that makes training enjoyable and pushes me to improve, even on tough days.

What kind of support do young male cyclists in Namibia need to succeed?

Mentorship from someone who understands their physical and mental needs. They require tailored training plans, access to quality equipment, and consistent guidance to help them prepare effectively. Mentorship should focus on building their confidence, aligning their goals, and keeping them committed to the sport.
