Personality of the week –  Uapandera could be the next big thing in goal shooting

Personality of the week –  Uapandera could be the next big thing in goal shooting

At just 19 years old, Windhoek-based Muundjua Uapandera is emerging as one of Namibia’s most promising netball talents. A goal shooter with a calm presence and a sharp eye, she currently plays for Unam Ogongo in the prestigious MTC Netball Namibia Premier League.

Her rise is remarkable, especially considering that she only started playing in 2020.

From curiosity to calling

“I was never interested in netball. But a friend introduced me to Dimitri Bittler, the coach of Afrocats NC. He saw potential in me and helped groom me into the player I am today.”

That chance introduction not only sparked a love for the sport but also revealed her natural ability as a goal shooter – a position that now defines her game. Uapandera believes the path to greatness starts with two core values: discipline and hard work. You have to keep practising until you get better,” she said.

Despite her growing reputation, she keeps her approach relaxed on match days. “I don’t prepare much. I never really get nervous. I just go out and enjoy myself.”

Eyes on the national team

While every match brings its own joy, Uapandera is clear about her long-term goal: earning a spot on the national team.

“Every match is memorable because you’re only as good as your last one. I want to play for Desert Jewels and make my friends and family proud. However, for me to get there, I need to work hard,” said the player.

Calm in crucial moments

In a role where precision under pressure is everything, she remains composed and focused.

“I am always cool under pressure. I just try to keep a level head and enjoy the match.” Uapandera’s current focus is sharpening her shooting and improving her fitness.

“Fitness is key. Once you’re fit, the game becomes easier. Netball is demanding – you can’t afford to get tired quickly.”

International dream

“I want to play for a big club abroad. But first, I need to prove myself here and get noticed by the national coaches.” -lmupetami@nepc.com.na
