The Inspector-General of the Namibian Police, Lieutenant-General Sebastian Ndeitunga, has called on participants in a meeting of Namibia and Angola’s joint technical sub-committee on security to come up with effective measures to arrest fugitive Lazarus Shaduka, who has been on the run since 2012.
“Shaduka has got family here and he has got a family in Angola, but he is hiding. I challenge you that after this meeting Shaduka should be arrested,” Ndeitunga said.
Despite the reward offered to any person with information that could lead to his arrest having been increased from N$20 000 to N$100 000, Shaduka has been on the run for over three years now, following his conviction in 2012 of the murder of his wife.
The two-day meeting at Oshakati was called to discuss bilateral cooperation, cross-border crime and the sharing of information on criminal activities between the two countries. In addition, the deliberations are also expected to focus on customs and excise, immigration, anti-poaching and human trafficking, among others.
“Joint cross-border operations should be intensified. I trust that through this gathering you will find solutions to some of these pertinent issues,” Ndeitunga said. According to the police chief, at present the two countries are both plagued with armed robberies, human smuggling, smuggling of contraband and other cross-border crimes.
Ndeitunga also expressed appreciation for the notable successes of the two forces, despite the challenges. He said their successes as law enforcement agencies were arrested by challenges, such as scarcity of resources, unfenced borders, non-gazetted points of entry, communication barriers and the global economic recession.
The co-chairperson of the joint committee, Commander of Cunene Province Antonio De Jesus Miranda Guedes, led the Angolan delegation.
