Poem – You conquered! Tribute to Dr. Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma

Poem – You conquered! Tribute to Dr. Samuel Shafiishuna Daniel Nujoma

Ndafetwa Ndinelao Haimbodi

12 May 1929 welcomed a Namibian revolutionary

Etunda village of Ongandjera welcomed an anti-apartheid activist

Kuku Kondombolo and tate Nujoma welcomed a Namibian father of the nation

A Lion roared

A leader was born

From a peasant family, a vision brightened

A Namibian’s lead to light was born

A beacon shone so bright since…

In 1960, a young and courageous Nujoma was seen wandering outside his motherland

He escaped through Botswana, Zimbabwe and was welcomed warmly in Tanzania by Julius Nyerere

With a bold spirit and an unyielding courage

Nujoma paved the way for Namibia to hold

A voice of the voiceless was heard from abroad

Through years of pain and chains

Nujoma’s spirit burned a chained Namibia

He stood so tall, answering Namibians urgent call to freedom

From SWAPO’s strength, a voice arose

Breaking free from bitter woes

A brilliant, fearless mind built ties with Cuba and Russia to aid Namibia from the vulture’s hands

Negotiations and battles he won

A new Namibia he begun

With wisdom and honour, Nujoma led with his heart

The first to lead, with a steady hand,

From a humble start to an honoured name,

He etched his place in history’s game

A father’s heart, a leader’s mind who guided Namibians towards light

21 March 1990 came, and the guns were put down

Nujoma freed his people from the physical pain

Oh father of freedom

A teacher of hope over fear

Though time may pass, but your legacy stands

You are a symbol of hope and a guiding star

Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, a friend and brother to Andimba Toivo ya Toivo, Chief Hosea Kutako, Samuel Witbooi, Comrade Usko Nghaamwa, Comrade Hidipo Hamutenya, Dr. Hage Geingob and Conrad Theophilus Hamutumbangela in liberation

With gratitude, we sing, for the freedom you gifted Namibia

For the joy that you brought this Land of the Brave

So, let us sing your praises high,

Let us scream your favourite songs to the top of our voices.

“  SWAAAPO eeli ofika, eli loongekida, ondjebo youpika SWAPO ei teyapo…

“Eembulu tadi kaakama, sho da mono shee tweya…”

For you have reached the sky for us

Let us praise a hero’s journey

A man so brave and bold that your story will forever be told

Easy first commandant

Easy first commander-in-chief

You lived
