Former President Hifikepunye Pohamba left for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, yesterday to head the African Union Electoral Observation Mission (AUEOM). Fifty more members of the African Union Short-Term Observation (STOs) mission arrived in that country on Sunday. Ethiopia will hold its 5th general election on May 24. The observers will remain in Ethiopia until May 28, 2015. The STOs will complement the work of African Union Long Term Observers (LTOs), who have been deployed since April 19, 2015, to follow up on the pre-election context. The mission comprises 50 STOs from AU member states and will be deployed throughout the country to follow the electoral process. STOs will also meet government and electoral officials, candidates and political parties, civil society representatives and media to critically assess the conduct of elections. President Pohamba’s mission has the mandate to observe the elections in line with relevant African Union and international instruments.
