Pohamba: Don’t destroy what Nujoma built

Hesron Kapanga

OKANGHUDI – Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba has urged Namibians against destroying what Founding President Sam Nujoma built.

In an interview with Nampa at his homestead at Okanghudi in the Ohangwena region on Tuesday, Pohamba said now that Nujoma has died, people should not think of destroying what he built, but should rather work towards building on the foundations he left behind.

He said his last visit to Nujoma was while he was hospitalised in Windhoek two weeks ago and that he came to realise that anything could happen.

“Death came to Nujoma, and we are no longer going to see him, but we have to look at what Nujoma has done from his childhood up to the time he left office,” he said.

He added that people should work towards building a Namibian nation Nujoma envisioned.

Pohamba stressed that Nujoma brought independence to the Namibian people and liberated them from the hands of the brutal oppressors, and under no circumstances should Namibians waste that independence and fall back into the hands of the oppressors again.

He added that he will forever cherish the memories they shared during the struggle for independence, the Cassinga Massacre, and ultimately Namibia’s independence on 21 March 1990.

“When I think of 21 March 1990, it reminds me of many Namibians killed during Cassinga, whose blood watered our freedom.

Overall, freedom was achieved and it covered all corners of the country,” he concluded.

Former First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba extended condolences to former First Lady Kovambo Nujoma and the Nujoma family, saying she is sad that the whole nation had lost an illustrious leader who brought freedom to the Namibian people.

“I thank God for the life of Nujoma. He has done a lot for the Namibian people and completed his task on earth,” she said.

She added that it is now the responsibility of Namibians to continue where Nujoma left off and to put into action everything that ensures development in the country. -Nampa
