Angola chooses SITA to improve aviation security

Angola’s Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) last week announced the selection of the Societe Internationale de Telecommunications Aeronautiques (SITA) to implement an Advance Passenger Information and Passenger Name Record system at Luanda’s new gateway, the Dr António Agostinho Neto International Airport.

SITA is a multinational information technology company providing IT and telecommunication services to the air transport industry. The company provides its services to around 400 airlines and 2 500 customers worldwide, which it claims is about 90% of the world’s airline business.

“The ANAC informs the industry and the general public that it has signed a contract for the acquisition of Services for the Implementation of the Advance Passenger Information System and Passenger Identification Record with the company SITA – Advanced Travel Solutions Limited. (API/PNR),” reads a statement from ANAC.

The Angolan aviation authority added that the new systems are required in accordance with the Chicago Convention, which established the International Civil Aviation Organisation, a specialised agency of the United Nations charged with coordinating international air travel.

“The Angolan State, aligned with good practices and international recommendations, approved, through Presidential Order no. 172/23 of 18 July, the acquisition of services for the implementation of the advance information system and passenger identification record, having delegated powers to the Minister of Finance, with the power to sub-delegate, to carry out all decision-making acts,” ANAC added.

The new system to be implemented is expected to strengthen Angolan aviation’s international compliance, and reinforce national security.

“We are convinced that Angola, complying with the assumptions of international compliance and strengthening national security, will be able to improve the traveller’s experience at Dr António Agostinho Neto Airport, and promote national economic development by attracting and promoting tourism and generating employment opportunities,”
ANAC stated.
