Basketball tourneys a success – Mwahafa

Namibia Basketball Federation (NBF) secretary general Titus Mwahafa  described the just-ended Inter Basketball Tournament a success, judging from the turnout at the weekend.

The competition was organised by Oshana Basketball Association (OBA) in association with the national basketball governing body, NBF. The event saw Namibia face neighbouring country Angola at the Caribbean Recreational Center in Oshakati.

The tournament was sponsored by Pupkewitz Volswagen North, Northern GTI Crew, FreshCo Fruit and Veg, Oshakati Pharmacy, Radio Electronics, Hohe Water,Angolan Consulate and Caribbean Recreational Centre.

Speaking to this publication yesterday, NBF SG said the main objectives were to promote the sports discipline in the two countries. He added with sports slowing becoming one of the biggest on the continent, it is right they begin with the grassroots development.

“The main objectives for this tournament were to improve, promote, regulate and control the game of basketball in the territory of the Republic of Namibia. This assists us in unifying, educational, cultural and humanitarian values, particularly through youth development programs,” he said.

He further said the event proved to be a success from the number of people that came out to supports which he said it shows how the sports is becoming big in Namibia. “We would like to have the same event next year with more teams, female and male. I was impressed with how people came in number to support and it shows how the sport discipline is growing in Namibia. We would like to have a bigger one next year,” he said.

Meanwhile, OBA president Victor Valde Nghilengwa said he was satisfied with the tournament and how team Namibia overall performed. Adding that such competitions add value in terms of growth of the sport.

“The tournament was one of its kind and the Namibian A team beat Namacunde Team and went on to lose to the finals against a revenge seeking Odjiva who lost to them in Angola in August of this year when they participated in their Hero’s Tournament in Namacunde Angola, overall, the tournament was a success and hopefully next year it will be bigger and better than this year,” he said.

The NBF will again host a tournament in the capital this coming Saturday in the KFC 3x3 which is expected to be exciting.
