Beneath the surface

In the midst of performing one of her new songs recently, multi-award-winning singer Adora broke into tears because the song is in remembrance of her friend who took his own life.

“He left a note that reads: ‘I’m sorry I can’t take this anymore. I wrote this letter so you can understand what I went through. Let me go now, life is better off without me.’ I’m still so heartbroken and still have so many questions but I hope you find the answers,” said a sobbing Adora as she addressed her deceased friend during the listening session of her latest EP titled ‘Beneath the Surface’ held at Zenzi’s Coffee Shop this past Wednesday.

Adora then told the small gathering that she is a better writer when she sings about something she went through, “because I feel that I can tell the story better, and that’s why I always try to be a little more on the receiving end of those kinds of experiences”.

Apart from the song about the suicide of her friend, ‘Beneath the Surface’ touches on topics such as gender-based violence and the unfair treatment of men. Some of the songs are ‘//Naxute’, ‘Talk to me’, and ‘You got this’.

“Every song written by my hands has its own unique story – love, pain, peace, confusion, depression, violence and compassion all at the same time and it’s a blessing to be able to speak for those that cannot do so for themselves,” she added.

She managed to finish her EP with the help of her producer ‘Kallo on the Beat’, who has worked on all her hit songs over the years, including ‘Pirikiti’ and ‘Sim di a’.

Coming from the south of Namibia, Adora is deliberate in representing her people, is vocal and also honest with what she says and how she says it.

Fans say her music is relatable, deep, powerful, and inspiring and gives them a reason to smile on a daily basis.

But Adora says she understands that “not everyone always receives a message in the way you imagined it” and she learned the hard way that “sometimes you have to keep certain things to yourself and other times it’s okay to talk about them”.

The EP is available on all platforms
