Cancer Apple Project Breaks Record
"By Staff Reporter WINDHOEK Bank Windhoek has announced in a statement that they have sold a record-breaking number of apples in the 2007 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project. This year a total of 832 949 apples were purchased by school children, business and the public from all across the country in support of the Cancer Association of Namibia. This amount signifies a 22.5% growth in apple sales since last year's project.ÃÆ'Æ'ÀÃ...ÃÆ''šÃ‚  ""This year's success is once again tacit proof of Namibians' commitment and support of the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project and shows that 'Together we do Better'. This support has contributed tremendously to making this project a national success,"" emphasized Marlize Horn, Senior Manager of Marketing and Corporate Communication Services at Bank Windhoek. This is the largest number of apples ever sold in the history of the project. The apples were sold through various Bank Windhoek initiatives including school competitions. A total of N$22 500 will be awarded to the winning top three schools in the pre-primary, primary and secondary school categories. To give even the smallest school the chance of winning, the ration between the number of apples purchased and the number of pupils will be calculated and audited. The staff of Bank Windhoek also embraced the project with commitment to making it a huge success. Within the past three months, they have organized a number of initiatives aimed at raising awareness and funds for the Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project. A very successful ""Apple Drive"" in partnership with Kosmos 94.1 was also hosted on April 12, 2007 where a number of businesses each bought an allotted number of apples in support of the project. A total of 70 000 apples were sold on that day alone and over 300 people shaved or coloured their hair in support of the initiative. The theme for the 2007 Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project is Eat Healthy, Live Healthy, Prevent Cancer. It was with this in mind that Bank Windhoek, in partnership with the Chefs Association of Namibia, launched the first ever Bank Windhoek Cancer Apple Project Recipe Competition. Through this initiative, Bank Windhoek would like to encourage the public to follow a well-balanced and healthy eating plan. ""The recipe competition is aimed at developing the right eating habits in all Namibians, thus helping us ensure that we become a much healthier nation overall,"" Horn added. Interested people have been asked to forward their typed or neatly hand-written recipes and a full-colour photograph of the prepared dish to the Marketing and Corporate Communications Services department at the Bank Windhoek Main Building before 3 May, 2007. The winner of this creative competition will be announced on 28 May and will receive a prize, said the statement."
