Cuca Tops set sights on NPFL

Rundu Cuca Tops Football Club have set their sights on getting promoted to the Namibia Premier Football League in the 2024/25 season.

Speaking to New Era Sports, Cuca Tops coach Ngondolf Mukoya said one of Kavango’s decorated clubs is determined to sustain its momentum in the ongoing Namibia Football Association North-East First Division (NEFD) as they chase promotion.

Cuca Tops has enjoyed a promising start to the season, securing two victories out of their three matches. They kicked off their campaign with a narrow 3-2 win against arch-rivals Rundu Chiefs before delivering a resounding 6-0 victory over Omuthiya United last weekend. Their only setback came in the form of a 1-0 defeat to Chief Santos. With six points from three matches, Cuca Tops currently sits atop the league standings.

Speaking about the factors that contributed to their early success, Mukoya remarked that the club had recruited the right talent.

“We have players who bring both youth and hunger to the team. There’s a great spirit within the squad, and each player is committed both on and off the field. We aim to maintain these high standards throughout the season to get us where we want to be.”

Cuca Tops last graced the top-flight football stages in 2002, when Mukoya himself was a player. He sees the current squad as capable of securing promotion to the premier league this time around.

“We’re taking each game as it comes, not putting undue pressure on ourselves. It’s still early in the season, and anything can happen. However, I have confidence in our ability to maintain this positive momentum. Our primary focus right now is on earning promotion to the premier league,” Mukoya affirmed.

He urged club fans to rally behind the team and support them in both home and away matches. Coach Mukoya expressed gratitude to the management for their unwavering support, acknowledging their tremendous efforts in ensuring the team’s smooth operations for the team.

“I also want to extend my appreciation to the management for their invaluable support. They have done a tremendous job in ensuring that we can focus on our game without any hiccups,” Mukoya emphasised.

Cuca Tops is closely followed by United Stars with five points, with Eastern Chiefs occupying third position with the same number of points.

At the bottom of the league standings, Further Fighters anchors the log behind KK United, occupying the second-to-last position with one point for both teams. Omuthiya United is in 10th place on the table with two points.
