The delay in the award ceremony of the recently-concluded Debmarine Namibia Premier League for the 2023/2024 season was attributed to budget constraints, Namibia Football Association’s (NFA) league director Mabos Vries has said. This ceremony, designed to recognise and honour players and technical staff, encountered unexpected costs not factored into the league’s budget, necessitating the sourcing of additional funds to host the event.
Vries elaborated on the unforeseen expenses, which arose from match postponements, shifts due to field unavailability, and the relocation of matches to alternative venues.
The league’s conclusion, which was initially scheduled for March, was extended to May, further contributing to the financial burden.
Despite the logistical challenges, African Stars emerged as the champions of the 2023/24 season, securing both the prize money and the coveted trophy.
Individual accolades, including the top goal-scorer, player of the season, defender of the season, coach of the season and best referee of the season, are also slated for recognition at the awards ceremony.
However, amidst the preparations, a dispute has arisen over the top goal scorer award.
Khomas Nampol asserts that their player Rewaldo Prins shares the title with African Stars’ Willy ‘Awillo’ Stephanus.
While reports from the referee’s office indicate Prins’ goal tally at 15, both Prins’ club, together with Life Fighters coach George Ochurub, state that the player has scored 16 goals, and has engaged the NFA to verify this discrepancy.
Vries assured a resolution to this dilemma would be reached by the end of the week, underscoring the association’s commitment to fairness and accuracy in awarding honours within the league.
