Federations pause activities to honour Geingob

In a gesture of respect and tribute to late Namibian president Dr Hage Geingob, sports federations across the country have unanimously decided to suspend all their activities from next week.

Yesterday, Netball Namibia (NN) announced the postponement of all netball activities.

“In light of the national period of mourning declared in honour of the late Dr Hage Geingob and the official announcement of his memorial service on the 24th of February and burial on the 25th of February, NN finds it necessary to instruct all its members to postpone all planned activities for that period. This decision has not been made lightly, and we understand the inconvenience it may cause,” NN stated.

Similarly, the Namibia Football Association (NFA) announced yesterday that they would suspend all activities for that weekend. Mabos Vries of the NFA confirmed to this publication that they will indeed put all activities on hold.

“We’re going to suspend all of our activities for the weekend. We will notify all our members, and communication will be sent out to all of them this week,” he said.

The Namibia Schools Sport Union (NSSU) likewise issued a statement to declare the postponement of all planned activities from the 23rd to the 25th of February until further notice.

“As you may be aware, an official announcement has been made regarding the memorial service for our late president, Dr. Hage Geingob, scheduled for the 24th of February 2024, followed by the burial on the 25th of February 2024. Consequently, we hereby direct that all planned NSSU activities at zonal, regional and national levels be suspended until after the burial.

Dr Hage Geingob was a passionate supporter of sports development, and as a sector, we are morally obligated to pay our respects, and stand together in these final moments as we bid farewell to this legendary statesman,” the statement read.

Other sports codes which have activities planned for that week nationwide are also expected to postpone them.
