FNB Schools Mountain League kicks off
WINDHOEK - The FNB Schools Mountain Bike League kicked off last weekend and was well attended by more than 80 young riders who grilled each for top honours in various categories. Ingrid Goeieman, Manager Sponsorships and Donations at FNB Namibia spoke on behalf of the main sponsor and said: “This schools’ league attracts all levels of cycling, from beginner to average and advanced. “We see it as a family fun event as well as a training ground for our young serious cyclists. Our main aim is that everyone should enjoy this healthy, outdoor sport code. We promote and support it wholeheartedly.” Aiden de Lange, an organizer, added that close to 80 riders attended the first event for the 2015 season. “Of specific mention is the overall enthusiasm of all the riders looking forward to a cycling filled calendar. The goal is to have as many schools as possible, from all parts of Namibia, participating in the finals. Four events will be held and scholars are required to participate in at least three of these in order to qualify for final championship points. On completion of the league, a Namibian team will be selected to participate in the South African schools final towards the end of the year.” De Lange further said the short course, the stiff climb, sharp turns and afternoon heat ensured a tough and enjoyable ride for all. “As each age category started in their respective time slots, the high school categories got off to a fast, hard and dusty start as of 16h00. The U/16 category was the most contested with over 20 riders chasing the slightly longer and more technical route.”
