International Yoga Day celebration on Sunday

The High Commission of India in Namibia is inviting all yoga enthusiasts and novices to the 9th edition of International Yoga Day at the United Athletics Field of the Windhoek Gymnasium School on Sunday.

International Yoga Day is celebrated annually on 21 June, following its inception in the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. It aims to raise awareness about the numerous physical and mental health benefits of practising yoga. The day also seeks to promote harmony and peace by emphasising the importance of holistic well-being.

“Yoga is very important for healthy living, especially for people with high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The stretches are good for the body, and one should always do that,” said yoga instructor Anurita Misra from the High Commission of India in Namibia.

She told VIBEZ! the event is open to individuals of all ages and fitness levels, and encourages inclusivity and accessibility. Participants are advised to bring their yoga mats or towels, and wear comfortable clothing suitable for physical activities.

“This year, we are targeting to reach more people as Namibians are very friendly and kind. Last year we had 12 000 people, and this year we want more than that,” said Misra.

“In addition, Namibians are enthusiastic about their health. Therefore, the High Commission of India invites all Namibians to come and participate.”

Yoga is a physical, mental and spiritual practice which originated in ancient India.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his UN address in 2014, suggested the date of 21 June as it is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, and shares a special significance in many parts of the world.

Misra offers yoga classes every day at the High Commission of India, with four sessions per day, and these are free of charge.
