Junior tennis tourney this weekend

Sanlam Namibia and the Namibia Tennis Associations (NTA) will this weekend host a junior tennis tournament in the capital, and organisers anticipate a huge turnout.

The event will take place at multiple venues such as the Police Club, Central Tennis Courts, and DTS on Friday and Saturday.

According to NTA chairman of junior tennis Santie van der Walt, they have received a good number of entries so far and they expect a few late registrations, but all is set.

“The due date for registration is tonight (Monday night) but we are still open to have a few late entries. The tournament will see a lot of upcoming tennis players who will be showcasing their talent. We are expecting a huge turnout on Saturday, so we expect fireworks all weekend long,” said Van der Walt.

The junior tournament will see players from U/10 to U/25 – singles and doubles – battle it out to get ranked after the tournament.

“This is quite a good tournament, especially for those wishing to compete in major competitions across the globe. Winners from this competition will get enough points to be rated and after being rated, the players with enough points will get a clear chance of competing in major tournaments on the continent and the world,” she said.

Meanwhile, Wendy Naruses, Sanlam marketing and communications manager, said they are happy to be part of the exciting tourney and believe that sports play a huge role in keeping people fit.

“The company, through its CSR focus areas: education and sports, recognises the importance of sports development in schools and is proud to be associated with sponsoring tennis.

“Sport will keep the learners’ minds fresh, physically fit, and add discipline to their study routine. Skills such as teamwork, multitasking and situational awareness will help in enhancing their academic skills and boost their confidence. With these initiatives we aim to empower our future leaders for them to live with confidence,” she said.
