Karate bags 42 medals in Zimbabwe

Namibia finished fourth at the just-ended African Union Sports Council (AUSC) championship that was held in Harare, Zimbabwe.

South Africa won the tournament collecting a total of 149 medals, 56 gold, 37 Silver and 56 bronze medal, while in second place Botswana took a total of 47 medals, with 22 gold 14 silver and 11 bronze medals. 

Host nation Zimbabwe came third with a total of 40 medals, bagging five gold medals 10 silver and 25 bronze medal. 

Namibia finished fourth overall, collecting 42 medals, with four gold medals 14 silver medals and 24 bronze medals. 

Zambia was fifth with a total of 23 medals with two gold and seven silver and 14 bronze medals.

Speaking to New Era  Sport yesterday, national coach Sensei Stefan van der Merwe expressed his satisfaction saying he is happy with
the number of medals collected. 

Although they wanted to finish the top three, he added that he is content with what they had.

“Competition finished yesterday evening. The tournament was great, despite a few delays. Our team performed incredibly well. We were hoping to retain our 3rd place in the total medal tally from last year, but for a relatively small team in comparison to some of the other countries present, we are very happy with our total medal tally,” he said
