Kilimanjaro’s independence boxing bonanza this month

Owner of the MTC Kilimanjaro Boxing Club Joseph Benhard yesterday assured they are ready and well-prepared to host this month’s independence boxing bonanza at the northern town of Ondangwa.

The boxing bonanza, which will coincide with Namibia’s 31st independence anniversary month, will take place on the 27th of this month at Ondangwa and will mark their first event for this year after hosting a string of successful events at the north last year.

The event will also see proceedings being divided into cards, with the first card of the day consisting of amateur fights featuring the country’s top boxing prospects, while the second card will close off the day with a raft of professional bouts.

Drawing inspiration from last year’s events, which were well received in the northern towns, Benhard yesterday said they are planning to host more events this year in order to accord more opportunities to young and upcoming fighters – especially those based in the northern parts of the country.

“The amateur event will start in the morning at around 10H00 and then the professionals will start at around 16H00 until late. We want to give everyone an opportunity to showcase their talents – both amateurs and professionals. It will also be great action for the fans in attendance and for those who will be watching from home. Boxers have been training hard since last year, so they are ready,” said the northern-based promoter.

Benhard added that a few boxers from the club that turned professional late last year will also be expected to make their professional debuts at the upcoming event.

“Some of our boxers turned professional late last year and these are the same boxers who will be making their debuts as a professionals at this event. I am so excited!”
