Motorists urged to adhere to road signs

Nuusita Ashipala

ONGWEDIVA - Police in Omusati have urged motorists and road users to be vigilant and observe road traffic signs in order to reduce road fatalities.

The police public relations officer for Omusati Region, Inspector Lineekela Shikongo, said the police have observed with grave concern that road users do not adhere to road signs.
He said with the ongoing Olufuko festival among other festivities in the region, road users are urged to take precautions and abide by road signs.

“We have observed that the public are reluctant to observe road signs,” Shikongo said.
Shikongo said the region is full of visitors, which requires motorists and other road users to behave courteously on the road especially at areas where there are no traffic lights.

But Shikongo said that since last week when the festival kicked off, the police have only recorded one major road accident that took the life of a 23-year-old occupant on Wednesday evening.

Five other occupant, including the driver of the vehicle, were rushed to the Oshakati Intermediate Hospital where they are being treated for slight to serious
injuries.

The accident happened on the Okahao-Oshakati road.
The driver was trying to avoid a donkey on the road.
“He was allegedly trying to avoid a donkey … and in the process lost control of the vehicle,” said Shikongo.
The car rolled several times before it came to a standstill.
