The Namibian College of Open Learning recently hosted its 2024 prize-giving ceremony, a hallmark event honouring the remarkable achievements of students in the 2023 national secondary education examinations.

Amidst the cheers and applause, one name shone brightly among the rest – Fillemon Shilongo.

As the overall achiever, Shilongo’s stellar performance, adorned with an A in Biology, a B in Maths, and another A in Chemistry, stood as a testament to his dedication and perseverance. Yet, it was not merely the grades that distinguished him, but the humility that radiated from him as he accepted a prestigious N$30 000 scholarship from Namcol.

He graciously acknowledged the talents of his peers, highlighting the collective brilliance which illuminated the academic landscape.

Reflecting on his unexpected triumph,
Shilongo offered solace to those who may have faltered along their journey.

“When you’re out there and you feel like you failed in life, it’s always fine to start over,” he remarked.

Yet, amidst the jubilation, a poignant revelation emerged from the shadows – the pervasive misconception surrounding Namcol. Many students confessed to harbouring doubts, fearing societal stigma and ridicule, believing Namcol to be a sanctuary for those deemed academically inadequate. However, the testimonials of success echoed resoundingly, dispelling the myths and misconceptions that clouded perceptions.

Best Overall Performer in Economics Tange Hange candidly shared her transformation from sceptic to believer, acknowledging the pivotal role Namcol played in redirecting her academic trajectory.

“Many people think Namcol is a place for failures. But when I came here, it was a whole different scenario,” she affirmed, a testament to the transformative power of education and opportunity.

Zarina Katongwe, once a sceptic herself, emerged triumphant as the Best Overall Performer in Physics in the Khomas region. Her story is a poignant reminder of the untapped potential awaiting those who dare to defy societal norms, and embrace the path less travelled.

As the ceremony drew to a close, a new chapter unfolded for the recipients of these prestigious awards. Armed with determination and resilience, they embarked on their next odyssey, pursuing higher education at esteemed institutions such as the International University of Management, University of Namibia School of Medicine, and the Namibia University of Science and Technology. Their journey is a testament to the transformative power of education, and the unwavering spirit of perseverance.
