Nyambe signs for Derby County

Brave Warriors defender Ryan Nyambe believes the stature of Derby County Football Club made it an easy decision for him to put pen-to-paper with the club.

The right-back, who has been capped 14 times by Namibia, was a free agent after leaving Championship side Wigan Athletic in the summer and has penned a short-term contract that will run until January 2024 with a view to extending.

He sat down with RamsTV to give his first thoughts after getting the deal over the line on Tuesday.

On signing for Derby County...

I’ve had a very warm welcome, and I’m very happy to get the deal done. It’s been a long period; it’s taken quite a few weeks to get sorted, but once it is, then it’s a happy process!

On getting his future sorted after being a free agent...

As a free agent, you’re just in limbo, training by yourself or with personal coaches. To get stability is important for any footballer or any person, so it’s very pleasing.

It always gives you a bit of anxiety to see everyone get started and play while you’re sitting at home. You want to be on the pitch, but in a way, it makes you even more eager to get out there.

On Paul Warne...

He seems like a very genuine person and very charismatic—that’s really important to me. As a person, you want to feel wanted, and when you feel wanted, that’s when you get the most out of someone, so that’s been important to me.

On getting started right away...

I’m ready to go. I’m ready to meet everyone else. I’ve met some of the lads, but I’m ready to meet the rest of them now. I look forward to getting on the training field and getting out in front of the fans at the stadium to show what I’m all about.

On the appeal of Derby County...

It’s a good club. I think everyone knows that Derby County is a Premier League-standard club. The fan base—you don’t get many grounds that have that many fans. To have almost 30,000 fans, that’s Premier League standard, and on a personal note as well, it’s a place where I can see myself developing and hopefully helping my career. On being successful in Sky Bet League One after being promoted with Blackburn Rovers previously...

It’s a tough league. Consistency and getting the results no matter how you get them, are important. It’s all about consistency. That will take you miles ahead of every team if you can maintain that consistency. The last time I was in the division was my breakthrough season in professional football, and when you get to the end and get promoted, it’s so worth it.
