Okahandja spelling challenge on the cards

The inaugural Okahandja Circuit Spelling Bee Competition (English) for secondary schools will take place on 25 April at the town.

This follows requests last year for all schools in the Okahandja Circuit to join the spelling bee competition this year after the successful hosting of the inaugural inter-school English spelling bee competition between Yuan Jue Private School and Five Rand Primary School in Okahandja on 10 May 2023.

The Yuan Jue Private School (Amitofo Care Centre) and Eden Combined School are co-hosting the event this year.

It is fully supported by the education ministry’s Okahandja Circuit, and learners from nine secondary schools (Grade 8 and Grade 9) will be participating in the competition.

“We have invited key stakeholders from Okahandja and beyond, as well as media representatives as our guests of honour to witness and support this thrilling educational event in Okahandja,” reads an invitation from Min-Ju Chen, the director of Amitofo Care Centre of Namibia.

The venue is the Multifunctional Hall at Amitofo Care Centre, situated some 7 km from B1, C31 Hochfeld Road, Okahandja.

It starts at 07h30, and ends at 14h00.

Refreshments and takeaway lunch will be provided.

Last year saw a total of 80 participants (10 spellers from each grade in grades 4 to 7 at each school) competing. Four spellers were crowned champions, and they were all from Yuan Jue Private School.

The children in both schools were given word lists three months in advance. The number of words on the lists was 350, 550, 700, and 800 for grades 4 to 7, respectively.
