Head coach of the Namibia national senior football team Collin Benjamin said they will do everything in their power to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Benjamin made these remarks during a press conference that followed their encounter with Cameroon in Yaoundé, the first leg of a back-to-back tie. The Warriors secured a 1-1 draw Friday evening, boosting their hopes of booking a place at the continental tourney set for Ivory Coast in January 2024.
The Warriors gaffer expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating that he was impressed and would like them to replicate the same gameplay in the second leg, which will be played in Johannesburg, South Africa, tomorrow.
“We have a great team with young, hungry players who are eager to win and work hard. I am happy with the performance and we hope to put out the same energy and performance in the second leg,” he said.
Cameroon currently led the log standing with four points from two matches, followed by Namibia in second place with two points from two matches, while Burundi occupies third and last position with a single point.
Asked about how the team plans to handle Cameroon at home to ensure they do not drop points, the former Hamburger SV legend emphasised the team will be fully prepared, knowing what they want out of the anticipated fixture.
“Our mission is clear – to qualify for Afcon, and that’s what we’re working towards. We know it’s going to take a lot of sacrifices and hard work – and that’s exactly what we’re going to do,” he added.
With his 26th-minute goal on Friday, Peter Shalulile has now become the all-time top scorer for Namibia at 14 goals, surpassing Rudolf Bester.
“As a striker, you have to anticipate the balls by being in the box and scoring goals That’s what we work for and train for. As a striker, you have to ensure you place yourself in the right position at the right time,” said the prolific goal scorer, who is also the top goal scorer in the PSL with his club Mamelodi Sundowns.
He said their ambition is to make it to Afcon and showcase Namibian talent.
The return leg will take place tomorrow at 15h00 at the Dobsonville stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa.
