Road accidents claim two lives

ONGWEDIVA – Two people have died in two separate accidents over the weekend in northern Namibia.

Omusati regional commander Ismael Basson told New Era one person died on the spot when the vehicle he was driving collided head-on with a truck, resulting in his vehicle being burnt extensively.

The incident occurred yesterday at about 02h35 at the Oshuungu village on the Oshikuku-Oshakati main road in the Omusati region.

It is alleged that the truck was travelling from Oshikuku to Oshakati when it collided head-on with the black Toyota Wish (seven-seater), which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The truck driver and passengers escaped unharmed.

The victim is yet to be identified, and the next of kin are yet to be traced.

The driver of the truck has been arrested, and investigations continue.

In another incident, a 41-year-old man died after he was thrown out of the vehicle he was driving.

The incident happened on Thursday at about 15h25, some 15km from Tsumeb to Otavi.

According to Oshikoto regional commissioner Teopolone-Kalompo Nashikaku, an Iveco bus that was pulling a trailer from Swakopmund to Ondangwa experienced mechanical problems and was then towed by a Toyota bakkie to Tsumeb.

However, as the two vehicles were going downhill, the speed of the bakkie was too high; as the driver applied brakes, the bus pushed forward into the bakkie, causing it to leave the road and overturn.

The driver of the bakkie was thrown out of the vehicle, and he sustained multiple injuries.

He was taken to the Lombard Clinic in Tsumeb by an ambulance but later succumbed to his injuries.

His next of kin are informed.

The driver and three passengers of the bus did not sustain injuries.
