Sport Klub Windhoek (SKW) demonstrated their resilience once again on Friday afternoon as they defeated Ramblers U/13 side 3-1 at the Jan Möhr football field.
Goals from York Ahrens, Jose Philander and Zanenkosi Khumalo secured three valuable points for SKW, while Eluisario Nangasovie managed to pull one back for Ramblers in the second half.
This victory extends SKW’s unbeaten run since the season’s kickoff, establishing them as strong contenders for the top spot before the mid-term holidays in June.
Ramblers coach William Theron said the game was tight, but that he was proud of how the boys played.
“The first goal mattered, and set the flow of the match. I think there are a lot of things we still need to work on, and finishing is one of them, because we had a lot of chances,” he said.
Theron decided to deploy a compact midfield style of play with three defenders as they wanted to play on the counter-attack with a lone striker upfront.
“The whole idea was to contain our opponent and spread out to the wings with one, two passes with through-balls to the striker, who was quite fast. It almost worked, but we will see how we will progress during the season.
“We have some players who switch off mentally during the match; we need to work on that,” added Theron. SKW’s coach Enrico Tjiramba felt they started well, but dropped momentum in the second half, which allowed Ramblers to get a goal. “The second half was a bit sloppy. I think the boys’ energy levels started dropping. I could see Ramblers coming back in the game.
They had a couple of chances, and got one goal back,” he said.
“Our goalkeeper saved two one-on-ones, so I was not happy with the performance of the second half. The defence is a bit slow. We were playing a bit of a high line, and we could not recover those runs, which the striker was making. That’s one thing we need to improve, especially our two centre-backs. They need to be very smart when they play,” he added.
