WALVIS BAY – The Namibian police in the Erongo region are requesting assistance from the public in solving the death of a 24-year-old man, who was treated for a head injury on 31 March in the Swakopmund State Hospital but died four days later in Windhoek.

The man, identified as Brendon Baumgarten, is believed to be homeless at the time of his death.

According to the police, Baumgarten initially received treatment at the Swakopmund State Hospital but was released three days later. 

On Monday, he was found unconscious – and because of the seriousness of his condition, he was transferred to Windhoek on the same day. He, however, died the following day.

Inspector Ileni Shapumba on Friday indicated the victim had a cut on the back of his head – for which he was treated.

“He was stitched and released on the same day. However, details of how he sustained the injury were not clear at that time,” he explained.

According to Shapumba, no additional injuries were detected when he was transferred to Windhoek.

“We now need to determine what caused his injury in the first place, as the circumstances surrounding his cause of death are sketchy. In the meantime, a postmortem will also be carried out.”
