Swakopmund to auction off council flats

SWAKOPMUND – The Swakopmund municipality is set to auction off a block of council flats that have become financially unsustainable.

The auction, set to take place next month, will involve the sale of a council complex, comprising four individual units. This move will be executed through a closed bid auction, with the upset price set at N$3 million.

The flats are no longer deemed economically viable by the council, as some of the units have remained unoccupied for months, thereby increasing the maintenance costs.

Linda Mupupa, spokesperson for the municipality, stated yesterday that the
council had previously considered selling the property in 2008 but instead opted to implement a market-related rental levy for staff members, rather than subsidised
rentals.

She said no one is affected by the sale of the flats, as notices were issued in advance to the families who live there.

“Currently, only two units are occupied by our employees; however, they have been served in advance a six-month notice of council’s intention to sell,” Mupupa said.

According to her, the sale of the property does not affect council’s outlook on emergency housing alternatives, as the bungalows always exist as an alternative in such emergencies.

According to the council, the property will be sold “as is”, and potential purchasers are advised to conduct a thorough assessment of its location and condition.

“It is important to note that negotiations will not be entertained after the sale is completed. Purchasers are also responsible for any necessary earthworks and associated costs to render the erf suitable for their intended use,” the council notice reads.

Those interested in participating in the bidding process are required to pay a N$14 000 non-refundable registration fee before 22 September.
