Woman beats mother over witchcraft allegations

RUACANA – A 39-year-old woman is set to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court today following her arrest after she assaulted her mother over witchcraft allegations.

The incident happened last week at Onandjandja village in the Omusati region.

According to Omusati police spokesperson Anna Kunga, the suspect assaulted her 65-year-old mother with a stick and plastic basket after a witchdoctor allegedly told the suspect that her mother was bewitching her.

According to the police, the suspect has always threatened to kill her mother and then commit suicide. She added that the suspect was drunk during the day of the attack.

Still in the Omusati, police are investigating a case of assault through threatening in which an Angolan man was chased by another man who was wielding a knife at the cuca shops in Onandjandja village last week.

It is alleged that the suspect threatened to kill the complainant for allegedly refusing to share a beer with him. The suspect is known but has not yet been arrested.

Kunga urged members of the public to report cases of domestic violence on time and refrain from protecting relatives who abuse them.

The police have also appealed to members of the public to stop carrying weapons to the cuca shops.

In another incident, a five-year-old boy died on Saturday night at Onamundindi village in Ogongo constituency after he had swallowed a needle.

The deceased identified Pius Santana, started coughing and not talking well and later died at home.
