… a Xmas treat for horse-racing fans

WINDHOEK – Fun seekers, notably those hooked on equestrian sport, could not have asked for a better Christmas present than the much anticipated Professor Peter Katjavivi Handicap to be staged at the popular Tjakomaue race track at farm Dankbaar, in the Otjozondjupa Region near Okondjatu, tomorrow.

Thoroughbred horses and their fired-up jockeys will descend on the track to battle it out for supremacy in various categories with lucrative prizes at stake, while proud horse owners would also like to finish the year on a high with bragging rights.

Horse racing is gaining popularity at a super pace with hundreds of people from all walks of life travelling from faraway towns and villages to be part of this adrenaline-pumping sporting discipline that has become a must-attend event for sports enthusiasts.

So far, the entry of slightly more than 20 horses has been confirmed with participants from Rehoboth, Rietfontein, Omaheke, Omaruru, Keetmanshoop and hosts Okurusengo.

Event organizers say all prizes at stake this time will be in cash and have done away with the customary bonus of Brahman heifers that were up for grabs for the top achievers.
